Finding Appropriate Professional Help for Yourself or Others

Have you been wondering how you can obtain mental health services for yourself or others? A web search for the words “professional care for mental health”, though can yield a plethora of results making the world of mental health services particularly difficult to navigate. Here are a few tips, to get you on the road to finding the appropriate support you or your loved ones may need:

  1. Look up your local hospital’s website and search for doctors who specialize in Psychology and/or Psychiatry – note many hospitals now offer virtual consultations.
  2. If you work for an organization that offers employee assistance programs – consider getting an appointment. These services are free and often available to retirees and/or dependents.
  3. Contact your local social service provider for referrals or guidance - https://www.usa.gov/state-social-services.
  4. If seeking treatment for mental and/or substance use disorders utilize authentic sources such as Findtreatment.gov - https://findtreatment.gov/ or begin with https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help .
  5. Access Psychology Today’s “Find a Therapist” option and search by city, zip code, name or even practice type - https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/therapists.
  6. If you feel comfortable enough, ask a friend or family member for recommendations or go to https://988lifeline.org/talk-to-someone-now/
  7. Add the following numbers into your cell phone contacts list:
    1. National Helpline: 1-800-662-HELP (4357)
    2. National Suicide Prevention Lifeline - 800-273-TALK (8255)
    3. Suicide & Crisis Lifeline – 988 – (dial for appropriate help – 1, 2, 3 or 4)
    4. Text message: 435748 (HELP4U) OR 741741
