Extension Workforce Development Network

The Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) Workforce Development Program Action Team (PAT), in partnership with the Extension Foundation, is in the process of developing an Extension network for workforce development. This Connect group will bring professionals at each land-grant university together to learn and collaborate on Extension's workforce development efforts.

How Can Extension Support AI Literacy in Workforce Education?

A recent news article revealed that only a handful of states have issued guidance for educators on the subject of AI in K-12 education. Despite this, there’s a swift transition towards supporting youth education that focuses on the skills and ethics required to utilize generative AI tools in professional settings.

The Cooperative Extension Service system, a significant advocate for workforce development opportunities for both youth and adults, urgently needs to create high-quality educational content that aligns with these educational objectives. Furthermore, the Extension plays a crucial role in determining how AI tools can enhance the lives of our clients. This is achieved by integrating these tools into existing educational programs and equipping clients with the skills necessary to evaluate the usefulness and accuracy of AI-generated outputs.

How is your organization addressing the application of generative AI for students, staff, faculty, and clients?

Hello Mark,

Here at Oregon State University, I have been doing presentations and basic training on AI for Extension faculty and staff. We are also starting to work on this at the university level. We are having an "AI Week" in April with workshops and talks on AI for education, professional development and workforce development.

With my new position as Broadband & Digital Technologies Adoption Coordinator, I am starting to field AI questions and requests for presentations and education from within and without the university. Interest in AI has exploded since OpenAI release ChatGPT and AI education is now one of my top priorities.

I am currently developing an AI education project for youth in collaboration with one of the tribes here in Oregon. The idea is to teach Generative AI skills to tribal high school students as a way to get them interested in STEAM subjects and career pathways. The workshop will also be geared to exploring self expression and indigenous identity, while encouraging discussion around relevant issues of technology bias, ethics, representation (or the lack thereof), data sovereignty and more.

Happy to talk more with anyone else involved or interested in this space.
