RSVP to join here.

Key reasons why nutrition is essential in cancer care:

  1. Maintaining a Healthy Weight: Good nutrition helps to maintain a healthy weight, which is crucial for cancer patients. Being overweight or obese can increase the risk of cancer recurrence, as well as the risk of developing other health problems.
  1. Supporting the Immune System: Cancer and cancer treatments can weaken the immune system, making patients more vulnerable to infections and other complications. A balanced and nutritious diet can help support the immune system and reduce the risk of infections.
  1. Reducing Treatment Side Effects: Many cancer treatments, such as chemotherapy and radiation, can cause side effects that affect the patient's appetite, taste, and digestion. A diet that is tailored to the patient's needs can help alleviate some of these side effects and improve their quality of life.
  1. Providing Energy and Nutrients: Cancer patients require more energy and nutrients than usual to help their bodies cope with the demands of cancer and its treatment. A diet that is rich in protein, healthy fats, vitamins, and minerals can help provide the energy and nutrients needed to promote healing and recovery.
  1. Improving Overall Health: A healthy diet can help reduce the risk of other health problems that can complicate cancer treatment. For example, a diet that is low in saturated fats and high in fiber can help reduce the risk of heart disease and diabetes, which are common health problems in cancer patients.

Good nutrition is crucial for cancer patients as it can help maintain a healthy weight, support the immune system, reduce treatment side effects, provide energy and nutrients, and improve overall health. A registered dietitian can work with the patient and their healthcare team to develop a personalized nutrition plan that meets their specific needs and goals.
