Polypharmacy (Part 2): The Rise of Prescription Drugs and OTC Medications

Adverse drug events are severe and one of the most common post-discharge complications, according to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. Continuous medication use has been linked with poor long-term care outcomes, particularly when misused and overprescribed. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that drug overdose deaths increased nearly 30% over a year (2019-2020), and roughly 75% of said drug deaths (91,799) involved an opioid. Learn how prescribing pain medication after discharge has inflated medication usage and explore the rise of non-prescription drugs since the beginning of the pandemic. Presenter: Erica Noel

About the Extension Foundation

The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. Today, the Foundation partners with Cooperative Extension through liaison roles and a formal plan of work with the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) to increase system capacity while providing programmatic services, and helping Extension programs scale and investigate new methods and models for implementing programs. The Foundation provides professional development to Cooperative Extension professionals and offers exclusive services to its members. In 2020 and 2021, the Extension Foundation has awarded 85% of its direct funding back to the Cooperative Extension System, 100% of funds are used to support Cooperative Extension initiatives.
