The Office of Disease Prevention and Health Promotion (ODPHP) is pleased to announce its next webinar: Healthy People 2030 Webinar Series: Strengthening Resilience in Children and Adolescents. During this one-hour event, ODPHP and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s National Center for Health Statistics will present on the webinar’s three featured objectives, and Healthy People 2030 Champion, Adaptive Sports Ohio, will present on their efforts to increase participation in sports teams for children and adolescents with physical disabilities.
The three Healthy People 2030 objectives to be featured during the webinar include:
- AH-02: Increase the proportion of adolescents who speak privately with a physician or other health care provider during a preventive medical visit
Speaking privately with a health care provider during a preventive medical visit is a sign of quality care and can help adolescents develop a sense of independence and autonomy. Keeping care confidential also encourages adolescents to ask for help early when they have a problem—and makes it less likely that they’ll avoid getting care. Interventions at both the practice site and provider level can make it easier for adolescents to speak privately with providers. - EMC-01: Increase the proportion of children and adolescents who communicate positively with their parents
Positive communication between parents and children includes talking about beliefs, experiences, and feelings. This type of communication is key to healthy relationships, and it can protect children from health risks and help them do better in school. Behavioral parenting and family interventions can increase positive communication between parents and children, including children with behavior disorders. - PA-12: Increase the proportion of children and adolescents who participate on a sports team or take sports lessons after school or on weekends
In addition to the health benefits of physical activity, playing sports can improve economic, social, and academic outcomes for children and adolescents. Programs and policies at the local, state, and national level can increase access to sports facilities, and communities can work to make youth sports programs and facilities safe, accessible, and inclusive.
