Recap: Using the Power of University Extension and Community Colleges to Increase Engagement

Long the foundation of Land-Grant Extension services, community engagement is increasingly central to the mission of public universities. Extension is a proven engagement and outreach platform for public university service. Engaging with a state’s people enables universities, in partnership with communities, to nimbly address local challenges. University-community collaborations are ideally poised to address transdisciplinary challenges such as climate change, pandemics, social justice, workforce, and youth development.

In a recent webinar hosted by the Extension Foundation, land-grant emeriti Scott Reed and Lou Swanson were joined by Eric Dunker, Associate Vice President of Dean of Business, Technology, and Workforce Partnerships at Arapahoe Community College in Colorado. The three presented case studies demonstrating the ways that universities can repurpose Extension services to meet the growing challenges of communities, and how community colleges can play an integral role in engagement. They discussed specific and actionable strategies for increasing community engagement.

A recording of the webinar - including an informative Q&A session - is available here.

About the Extension Foundation

The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. Today, the Foundation partners with Cooperative Extension through liaison roles and a formal plan of work with the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) to increase system capacity while providing programmatic services, and helping Extension programs scale and investigate new methods and models for implementing programs. The Foundation provides professional development to Cooperative Extension professionals and offers exclusive services to its members. In 2020 and 2021, the Extension Foundation has awarded 85% of its direct funding back to the Cooperative Extension System, 100% of funds are used to support Cooperative Extension initiatives.
