June National Health Observances: Alzheimer’s Disease, Safety, HIV, and More

Each month we feature select National Health Observances (NHOs) that highlight important health issues affecting people across the nation. In June we’re raising awareness about Alzheimer’s disease and brain health, safety, HIV testing and sickle cell disease.

To make it easy for you to help spread the word, we’ve pulled together some resources that you can use to promote these NHOs below. 

• Alzheimer’s & Brain Awareness Month
  Each June the Alzheimer’s Association recognizes Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness Month as a time to focus national attention on Alzheimer’s disease and other dementias. This month, explore the Alzheimer’s Disease and Healthy Aging resource page from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). And use our easy-to-understand MyHealthfinder resource on healthy aging to encourage adults to protect their health as they grow older. If you’re interested in national efforts aimed at improving health and quality of life for people with dementia, including Alzheimer’s, check out the Healthy People 2030 Dementias objectives. 

• National Safety Month
  The National Safety Council sponsors National Safety Month each June to spread the word about keeping everyone safe in the workplace — and any place. This year’s weekly topics range from injury and fall prevention to musculoskeletal disorders.  Encourage people in your community to learn about safety by sharing our MyHealthfinder safety topics. And be sure to read up on the Healthy People 2030 Injury Prevention objectives.

• National HIV Testing Day
  Sponsored by HIV.gov, National HIV Testing Day on June 27 is a time to encourage people to get tested for HIV, know their status, and get linked to care and treatment. Check. For campaign materials and information on how to get involved, check out the CDC’s National HIV Testing Day resources. You can also share our MyHealthfinder resource to encourage people to get tested for HIV. And don’t forget to explore Healthy People 2030 to track progress toward objectives related to HIV and other sexually transmitted infections.

• World Sickle Cell Day
  Every year the Sickle Cell Disease Association of America (SCDAA) sponsors World Sickle Cell Day on June 19 to raise awareness about sickle cell disease and the challenges that patients and their families face. Use these resources and share this flyer from SCDAA to shine the light on sickle cell disease. And check out the Healthy People 2030 objectives for Blood Disorders to learn about efforts to prevent illness and disability related to blood disorders.
