Earth Day Climate Resources for Extension Professionals

Extension programs across the system are helping to combat the threat of climate change and are working to help producers adapt to new technologies and methods. We want to highlight resources that are relevant to support Extension professionals in this area. These resources include online publications, webinars from the Impact Collaborative Summit focused on building climate change resiliency in Extension, and a subgroup all designed to help Extension professionals build knowledge, connect with other programs doing climate-related work, and find new tools.

See our resources below.

The National Registry of Extension Programs and Assets: Climate and Weather Programs
The registry is a platform that enables Extension Professionals to upload and share their climate-related programs and resources. You can explore other programs on the registry that aim to educate and assist audiences on climate-related issues. Additionally, the registry contains curriculums, certification programs, and educational tools that Extension Professionals have utilized to fulfill the needs of their communities.

Extension Climate & Extreme Weather Programming: Successes, Challenges & Opportunities – Publication
This report, created in response to an Extension Foundation RFP, provides a national inventory of Cooperative Extension programs and practices related to climate and extreme weather. The report includes a database with insights into programming successes, challenges, and opportunities, aligned with Project Drawdown and other frameworks. The project team also interviewed Extension professionals to learn about factors involved in this type of programming. The data was compiled by a multi-state team from various institutions.

The publication was created by a team of Extension professionals to help the agricultural industry become more resilient to weather extremes, climate variability, and climate change. Based on the Weather Ready Farms model developed by Nebraska Extension, the publication focuses primarily on field crop farms and producers in the Great Plains and Midwest regions of the United States. However, many of the topics, concepts, and discussions explored in the publication - including best practices - can be used and adapted for other regions and agricultural operations.

National Extension Climate Initiative (NECI) Connect Subgroup

The National Extension Climate Initiative serves to link climate change-related education and research across Extension program areas and associations. This subgroup acts as a place to share opportunities and resources, and discuss all things related to climate change extension.

In 2020 and 2021, the Extension Foundation has awarded 85% of its direct funding back to the Cooperative Extension System, 100% of funds are used to support Cooperative Extension initiatives.
