Call for Papers: Transdisciplinary Collaboration for Sustainable Agriculture

Hello all,

I’m Claire Beveridge and I work for University of California Cooperative Extension as a Small Farms Water Conservation Coordinator. I also serve as an Editor for the Community Science Exchange (CSE) of the American Geophysical Union (AGU), which supports a peer-reviewed scholarly journal, Community Science, and an online venue for material outside of, and complementary to, peer-reviewed article formats, the Knowledge Exchange Hub.

I am writing to invite you and your collaborators to consider publishing your work within CSE. Of notable interest may be CSE’s current special collection on the topic of “Transdisciplinary Collaboration for Sustainable Agriculture” . The deadline for submission is May 1, 2025.  Here is more about the collection:

Agriculture is facing numerous sustainability challenges. Gains in agricultural productivity continue to provide society with essential food, fuel, and fiber; but agriculture remains a leading cause of environmental problems, including the loss of biodiversity and nutrient pollution. All the while, stakeholders involved in agricultural production, particularly farmers, are confronted with significant social and economic challenges worldwide. As a result, the pursuit of sustainable agriculture production is imperative and requires new partnerships across the boundaries of disciplines, sectors and nations. In this endeavor, it is particularly important to actively involve members of traditionally marginalized communities and elevate their voices. With the theme in focus, we are delighted to invite submissions to a special issue titled "Transdisciplinary Collaboration for Sustainable Agriculture." We welcome contributions that showcase collaborations for sustainable agriculture at any single or multiple spatial scales, be it local farm initiatives, regional strategies, watershed management, or global perspectives. For submissions to the journal "Community Science", direct representation of community voice is strongly encouraged.

Topics for this call for papers include but not restricted to:

  • Sustainable Agriculture
  • Stakeholder Engagement
  • Interdisciplinary Transnational Local Farm Initiatives
  • Regional Strategies
  • Watershed Management Global Perspectives

Here is more background on the Community Science Exchange (CSE) and publishing opportunities:

CSE publishes work that represents a collaborative effort between community members and science scholars across a wide range of participatory models. We include work done within Indigenous, non-Western, and Western (aka "mainstream") frameworks of empirical, hands-on science, across a continuum from discovery to solutions, and stretching across disciplines within social and natural sciences, agriculture, engineering, and public health.

  • Papers submitted to Community Science journal should feature science findings (the outcomes of the collective community–scientist work) and include community representation and voice. Unlike other disciplinary journals (which also publish participatory science), Community Science is a unique space inviting authors to include community description, and describe community impact resulting from the work.  You can see examples of work published in Community Science here.
  • Materials submitted to the Knowledge Exchange Hub are broader, and include case studies, guides, curricula, data-sets, blogs, videos, and art, that illustrate the work of community science around the globe.  This multimedia venue allows people from all kinds of professional and community backgrounds to learn about, engage in, and share the processes, impressions, and results of community science. Please see examples here (DOIs available for certain types of submissions).

Finally, I would like to highlight why I think CSE is an ideal publishing outlet for agriculture extension professionals:

  • While it can be difficult to find academic journal outlets for the community-focused type of work done in extension, CSE elevates it.
  • Unlike typical extension journals, CSE reaches a broader audience of interdisciplinary scientists and community members.
  • The CSE Hub also provides a unique avenue to share the various forms of research and extension products often generated which are not journal articles.

CSE is a highly innovative experiment in publishing, at the forefront of an exciting expansion of science, and I hope that you all can be part of it! Please feel free to reach out to me (cbeveridge@ucanr.edu), or any of the CSE editors with thoughts, questions, or article ideas, or send a presubmission inquiry to communitysci@agu.org. Thank you for your consideration!

Sincerely,

Claire F. Beveridge, PhD, PE
