National Urban Extension Leaders

Get engaged with NUEL! The National Urban Extension Leaders (NUEL) began in 2013 as a grass-roots effort of a group of passionate and committed urban Extension educators with the mission to advocate and advance the strategic importance and long-term value of urban Extension activities by being relevant locally, responsive statewide, and recognized nationally.

Urban Professionals Explore Aspects of Culture

The NUEL JEDI (Justice, Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion) Action Team hosted its second learning session, Cultural humility, translation, competency: What does it all mean for urban Extension? on March 17.  Extension professionals across the country came together to explore these key terms and learn how we can apply them when interacting with community members and colleagues.  To help us expand our learning, we were joined by Extension professionals Eduardo Gonzalez, Cornell, Esmerelda Mandujano, UC Davis, and Julie Jesmer, Washington State.  Through expert presentations and large and small group discussions, we learned how these elements of culture impact socialization and directly connect to us at the individual, interpersonal, organizational, and societal levels.  We explored definitions, frameworks, applications, case studies, and potential action steps!

Are you interested in similar topics?  Looking to expand your reach through a JEDI lens?  Join us this summer for the next learning circle, when we explore possibilities for Extension outreach within subsidized/public-sector housing.

About the Extension Foundation

The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. Today, the Foundation partners with Cooperative Extension through liaison roles and a formal plan of work with the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) to increase system capacity while providing programmatic services, and helping Extension programs scale and investigate new methods and models for implementing programs. The Foundation provides professional development to Cooperative Extension professionals and offers exclusive services to its members. In 2020 and 2021, the Extension Foundation has awarded 85% of its direct funding back to the Cooperative Extension System, 100% of funds are used to support Cooperative Extension initiatives.
