The Collective for Health Equity and Well-Being

Cooperative Extension’s Collective for Health Equity and Well-Being is a community of Extension personnel and their partners united by their shared commitment to advancing health equity and well-being. Members work together to support the implementation of Cooperative Extension’s National Framework for Health Equity and Well-Being (2021) to ensure that all people can be as healthy as they can be.

The Next Pandemic: Mental Health

 
The first wave of the COVID-19 pandemic was a threat to our physical health.  The second wave was an economic crisis.  According to a recent article published on Saturday in EdSurge, the third will be a mental health crisis.  In the article, the authors suggest that roughly 25 percent of isolated children or adults can be expected to experience post-traumatic stress following a health-related pandemic.  Early signs suggest that the current pandemic will be no different, with even higher rates of mental health disorders presenting in those who were already experiencing economic or social instability prior to COViD-19.  Children who had already experienced at least one Adverse Childhood Experience prior to the pandemic are also expected to fare worse.
