Lancet Commission Proposes New Obesity Definitions

On Tuesday, the Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology Commission published a new scientific consensus paper addressing the diagnosis of pre-clinical and clinical obesity.  Yesterday an NPR story highlighting the  recommendations contained in the paper focused on the creation of a more refined, multi-factor measure of obesity than BMI.

The paper suggests that "public health strategies to reduce the incidence and prevalence of obesity at population levels must be based on current scientific evidence, rather than unproven assumptions that blame individual responsibility for the development of obesity."

By my read, the Commission's specific aim was to "establish objective criteria" standardizing valid/reliable body-based measures (e.g. waist-to-hip ratio) with BMI (i.e. weight kg/height m squared) for "disease diagnosis, aiding clinical decision making and prioritization of therapeutic" [e.g., surgical, pharmacological] interventions in individual/adult patients, and to inform evidence-based "public health strategies to reduce the incidence and prevalence of [clinical] obesity" and strengthen surveillance in/among populations with known [pre-clinical] obesity risk factors.
