Do you struggle to get evidence-based information for your community programming? Do you spend too much time digging for relevant materials for your teaching and grant writing?
Learn how to effectively use library websites with three librarians to guide you. We will present resources from the National Agricultural Library, your land grant library and other regional resources. There will be a brief database demonstration as well. A handout of resources useful for Extension work will be provided. A more advanced webinar is being planned for spring 2015.
Librarian Bios
Presenter:
Kristen Mastel is an Outreach and Instruction Librarian at the University of Minnesota. She received her Masters of Library Science from Indiana University, and her undergraduate Bachelor of Arts from the University of Minnesota-Morris. Her research areas of interest include instruction, information literacy, outreach and instructional design. Kristen has broad and deep experience promoting statewide resources to the Extension staff, guiding them on how to integrate these resources into their curriculum and services for the public.
Presenter:
Stephanie Ritchie is a Librarian at the Alternative Farming Systems Information Center (AFSIC) at the USDA's National Agricultural Library. She specializes in information about local food systems, organic production, beginning farmers/starting a farm, specialty crops, aquaculture, renewable energy, and natural resources. Stephanie earned a Master of Library Science at the University of Maryland and an undergraduate degree in environmental studies from Macalester College, where she was first introduced to sustainable agriculture. She followed her interest in the field, literally, as an apprentice on a collection of small organic farms in her home state of Minnesota. Stephanie hoped to start a farm, but found herself drawn to a library career based on a bad reading habit and a love of libraries. Happily, she is able to indulge both her passions at the same time.

Madeleine Charney is the Sustainability Studies Librarian at the University of Massachusetts Amherst Libraries and serves as liaison to the Stockbridge School of Agriculture, Extension, and the Department of Landscape Architecture and Regional Planning. She earned a Masters of Library Science at the University of Rhode Island, and a Masters of Arts in Landscape Design and Planning from the Conway School. Before coming the UMass Amherst, she worked as solo librarian at the New England Small Farm Institute, trained as a Master Gardener, and received her Permaculture Certification before most people had heard this term before.
