Variability in Stock Water Quality and Changes Due to Drought

Not only does drought affect the quantity of water available for livestock to drink, it can also impact the quality. As water evaporates, high concentrations of many compounds which are detrimental or even deadly for livestock can be left behind.

Thursday, Aug 23 at 9:30 a.m., Dr. Mark Petersen, Fort Keogh Livestock and Range Research Laboratory Research Leader will present, “Variability in Stock Water Quality and Changes Due to Drought,” the fourth in a series of webinars focused on drought and fire related topics. Petersen has spent the last 3 years inventorying and evaluating the water sources on the 55,000 acre Fort Keogh research station. During his presentation, Mark will share the findings of his research, detail the implications for Montana livestock producers, and present some ideas about management of drought impacted water resources.

The Montana State University Fire and Drought Webinar Series is free and open to the public. Sessions will be held each Thursday morning at 9:30 a.m. through Sept. 13 and cover a comprehensive range of topics relevant to current wildfire and drought conditions.
The series will be archived and remain available via MSU Extension’s Fire and Drought Resources web page, http://www.msuextension.org/wildfire.
