Using Social Media in Disaster Recovery: Missouri Examples

Social media has a niche area of informing people during and after a disaster. The first successful large scale use of social media after a disaster was in Joplin after an F5 tornado totally destroyed 1/3 of the city of Joplin on May 22, 2011. MU Extension assisted in developing the Facebook page joplintornadoinfo along with dedicated volunteers. This same model was then used as flooding approached northwest MO with MoFloodInfo and when Branson was hit on leap day 2012 (there are still over 17,000 followers of BransonTornadoInfo). This presentation will share the successes of these sites. Participants can also get a copy of β€œUsing Social Media in Disaster Recovery.” Presentation available online at http://www.slideshare.net/MUExtension417/social-media-in-a-disaster

About the Extension Foundation

The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. Today, the Foundation partners with Cooperative Extension through liaison roles and a formal plan of work with the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) to increase system capacity while providing programmatic services, and helping Extension programs scale and investigate new methods and models for implementing programs. The Foundation provides professional development to Cooperative Extension professionals and offers exclusive services to its members. In 2020 and 2021, the Extension Foundation has awarded 85% of its direct funding back to the Cooperative Extension System, 100% of funds are used to support Cooperative Extension initiatives.
