Dr. Barbara O'Neill and Dr. Michael Gutter along with Dr. Tim Griesdorn will present Saving Money: Research Insights on behalf of the Financial Security for All Community of Practice during America Saves Week.

This webinar is designed to present a compilation of statistics and research findings about savings behavior and saving money. Even more importantly, it will include actionable implications of this research for financial practitioners; i.e., the “so what?” An example is strategies to encourage people to save and/or overcome obstacles that prevent people from saving. The webinar will include the latest statistics about current U.S. savings rates and historical savings rates. It will also discuss studies related to savings behavior, demographic characteristics of successful savers, retirement savings, and effective savings education programs. Participant interaction in the webinar will include sharing links for savings research and answering the same questions about savings that researchers have posed in their studies.

Speakers

Dr. Barbara O’Neill, financial resource management specialist for Rutgers Cooperative Extension, has been a professor, financial educator, and author for 35 years. She has written over 1,500 consumer newspaper articles and over 125 articles for academic journals, conference proceedings, and other professional publications. She is a certified financial planner (CFP®), chartered retirement planning counselor (CRPC®), accredited financial counselor (AFC), certified housing counselor (CHC), and certified financial educator (CFEd). Dr. O’Neill served as president of the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education and is the author of two trade books, Saving on a Shoestring and Investing on a Shoestring, and co-author of Investing For Your Future, Money Talk: A Financial Guide for Women, and Small Steps to Health and Wealth.  She earned a Ph.D. in family financial management from Virginia Tech and received over three dozen awards for professional achievements and over $900,000 in funding for financial education programs and research.
Dr. Michael Gutter is an Assistant Professor and Financial Management State Specialist for the Department of Family, Youth, and Community Sciences, in the Institute for Food and Agricultural at the University of Florida. Dr. Gutter is also the Principle Investigator for the Military Families Learning Network’s Personal Finance Community of Practice. Dr. Gutter is the current Vice President of the Florida Jumpstart Coalition and serves on the editorial boards for the Journal of Consumer Affairs, Journal of Consumer Education, and the Journal of Financial Counseling and Planning. The common theme that connects Dr. Gutter’s Research, Teaching and Outreach is helping households achieve financial security. Dr. Gutter’s outreach projects include Managing in Tough Times, Florida Saves, Get Checking, and the Master Money Mentor. His projects focus on enabling access to resources and services as well as improving people’s knowledge and understanding about family resource management. These projects have had funding from the Consumer Federation of America and Bank of America.
Dr. Tim S. Griesdorn, Ph.D. is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Human Development and Family Studies at Iowa State University. He received his Ph.D. from Texas Tech University in Personal Financial Planning. His research interests include financial literacy, financial education in the workplace, and behavioral finance. Griesdorn holds the AFC® (Accredited Financial Counselor) designation from the Association for Financial Counseling and Planning Education, the CRC® (Certified Retirement Counselor) designation from the International Foundation for Retirement Education, and the CFP® (Certified Financial Planner) designation from the Certified Financial Planning Board of Standards.

The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. Today, the Foundation partners with Cooperative Extension through liaison roles and a formal plan of work with the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) to increase system capacity while providing programmatic services, and helping Extension programs scale and investigate new methods and models for implementing programs.
