This webinar will present the collection of knowledge developed during research into sustainable biofuels and co-products at the Agricultural Research Service (ARS) of the USDA. Over the last decade, this research has addressed thermochemical conversion of biomass to fuels and chemicals via the pyrolysis platform.
The presentation will begin with some principles underlying the pyrolysis of biomass followed by a discussion on thermal only pyrolysis, the traditional pyrolysis process under inert atmosphere with no catalyst, and the instability issues associated with their product distribution. How the issues are being resolved through various technological developments including reactive pyrolysis, catalytic pyrolysis, and feedstock selection will be discussed in light of intramural and extramural funding opportunities afforded to the presenter and his group over the decade.
