PowerPay: 30 Years of Helping Debtors Become Savers

Celebrate the 30-year anniversary of PowerPay – a debt reduction tool created by Utah State University in 1993. PowerPay has provided personalized debt repayment plans, is used and recommended by Extension professionals in multiple states and is utilized by the military and large corporations. Learn how this long-standing Extension program is one of the best free tools to help consumers streamline their debt payoff, saving money on interest and years of debt repayment. Discover how to use PowerPay and how to incorporate it into financial education to enhance consumers’ ability to make realistic debt payoff plans.

Melanie D. Jewkes is an Extension Professor with Utah State University, based in Salt Lake County. She earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Family Finance. With 15 years' experience in community educational programs, she oversees programs in family finance, nutrition and food preservation. She directs the PowerPay program and the USU Extension HUD- and USDA Rural Housing-approved online homebuyer education course. Melanie successfully received more than $5.5 million in grant funding and has been awarded numerous national, regional and state awards for her efforts in improving the lives of people in Utah. She loves good dark chocolate, enjoys hiking with her husband and four kiddos, and plans to hike in all the national parks.

Vincenza Vicari-Bentley is an Accredited Financial Counselor and Program Coordinator for the Empowering Financial Wellness program with Utah State University-Extension, based in Salt Lake County. Vincenza is a proud military spouse who earned her MBA with a focus on Marketing and Finance. Since 2015, she has been working with individuals and families providing financial counseling as well as teaching a variety of personal finance topics. In 2022, she was awarded a scholarship and began pursuing further education to become a Certified Financial Planner (CFP) to help counsel clients through major financial decisions. She is passionate about helping women and empowering them to understand and improve their finances.

About the Extension Foundation

The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. Today, the Foundation partners with Cooperative Extension through liaison roles and a formal plan of work with the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) to increase system capacity while providing programmatic services, and helping Extension programs scale and investigate new methods and models for implementing programs. The Foundation provides professional development to Cooperative Extension professionals and offers exclusive services to its members.
