About the Webinar

Spotted-wing drosophila (SWD) has emerged as a devastating pest of small and stone fruits worldwide. Losses due to SWD can be as high as 100% and have been valued more than $718 million annually in the U.S.  The zero tolerance for SWD in fresh fruit has led conventional growers to make preventative insecticide applications when fruit are ripe.  Organic management of SWD is even more challenging due to the low number of effective OMRI-approved materials and limited understanding on the biology of SWD to translate into non-chemical management tactics.  Our multi-regional team was funded by USDA-NIFA through OREI Award No. 2018-51300-28434 to develop, evaluate and implement systems-based organic management programs for SWD.  This webinar will provide a comprehensive update on organic management of spotted-wing drosophila. It will summarize findings of the research conducted by our project team on organically approved strategies including behavioral, cultural, biological, and chemical tactics to manage SWD.

Presenters include:

Dr. Ash Sial (University of Georgia): Ash Sial is blueberry entomologist at the UGA and is Project Director for the SWD Organic Management grant funded by USDA-NIFA through OREI.
Dr. Kent Daane (University of California Berkeley): Kent is an Extension Specialist at UC Berkeley with a focus classical and augmentative biological control. He is known worldwide for his work on biological control of SWD.
Dr. Elena Rhodes (University of Florida): Elena is a fruit entomologist and works on behavioral management techniques to control spotted-wing Drosophila.
Dr. Gabriella Tait (Oregon State University): Gabriella is a fruit entomologist and works on cultural control strategies for spotted-wing Drosophila.
Steve Van Timmeren (Michigan State University): Steve is a fruit entomologist and works on chemical control and resistance management strategies for spotted-wing Drosophila.
Leah English (University of Arkansas): Leah is agricultural economist and develops production budgets and interactive economics-based tools to aid farmers with production and pest management decisions.
Dr. Kay Kelsey (University of Georgia): Kay is impact evaluation specialist and works with farmers and researchers to develop tools to evaluate impact of research and extension projects.

FAQs for Learn Calendar Users:

Will a recording be available?

That is entirely up to the host of this webinar/online event. If this is an eXtension Foundation hosted event - we will update this calendar listing with a link to the recording usually within 48 hours. Keep in mind, many of the offerings found here in Connect Extension are brought to you by your colleagues across the system. While we encourage them to update their listings with recordings, it is entirely up to them.

How do I know if it is an eXtension-hosted event?

eXtension posts publicly our events to two calendars - the eXtension Foundation Member Calendar and the Opportunities for Cooperative Extension Calendar.  All other events coming from across Cooperative Extension are posted to the Learn Calendar or to one of the regional calendars. All calendars populate to the same main calendar on Connect Extension. To tell the difference between what events are posted to what calendars easily, you'll see the name of the calendar posted above the title of the event if you scroll to the top.

What if I have trouble accessing this webinar?

Please contact the author of this calendar event. The individual that posted this event will have their username automatically listed at the bottom of the body of their post, right above the social media buttons. When you hover over that name, you are able to send them a private message.

About the Extension Foundation

The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. Today, the Foundation partners with Cooperative Extension through liaison roles and a formal plan of work with the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) to increase system capacity while providing programmatic services, and helping Extension programs scale and investigate new methods and models for implementing programs. The Foundation provides professional development to Cooperative Extension professionals and offers exclusive services to its members. In 2020 and 2021, the Extension Foundation has awarded 85% of its direct funding back to the Cooperative Extension System, 100% of funds are used to support Cooperative Extension initiatives.
