New Drought Resources Help Communities Respond

Please note: webinar link is not active until 15 minutes prior to the webinar.

Communities now have more tools to plan for and recover from drought. The Extension Disaster Education Network (EDEN) has worked with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the National Voluntary Organizations Active in Disaster (N VOAD) to develop two new tools. Today’s webinar will feature those resources.

One is the Community Capacity Building Guide for Drought Response. This guide was finalized in January, 2016 after it had been piloted in New Mexico in 2015. Tom Dean and Jessica Smith, Extension specialists from New Mexico State University will talk about that pilot and show specific outcomes from the work done in Socorro County, NM.

Steve Cain, Purdue Extension specialist and EDEN Homeland Security Project Director, will introduce the guide itself to show the process and tools that communities can use to assess their drought risks and prioritize actions. In addition, Cain will introduce a new disaster “Ask the Expert” and web resource system that is being tested and further developed by the USDA in cooperation with EDEN and N VOAD.

About the Extension Foundation

The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. The Foundation provides professional development to Cooperative Extension professionals and offers exclusive services to its members. In 2020 and 2021, the Extension Foundation has awarded 85% of its direct funding back to the Cooperative Extension System, 100% of funds are used to support Cooperative Extension initiatives.

This technology is supported in part by New Technologies for Ag Extension (funding opportunity no.
