Financial Security for All Webinar: Mapping Manufactured Housing

ZOOM

As affordable housing becomes a growing concern, many communities and home buyers are considering manufactured housing as a solution. Although manufactured housing can be one of the more affordable options for home buyers and more expedient options for communities to address housing affordability and shortages, it also presents some unique challenges. For home buyers financing can be tricky, as homes are often titled as personal property and traditional mortgages may not be available. Homebuyers may also face challenges if the home is on rented land. Meanwhile zoning restrictions, stigma, increase vulnerability to natural disasters, and resistance from existing residents can hinder the integration of manufactured housing into communities. In this webinar you will be introduced to a new manufactured housing resource that has mapped the locations of manufactured housing and you will learn about ways that this resource can be used in your work. The research presented in the webinar was funded by the National Science Foundation (Award # 2048562).

The two presenters will be Dr. Noah Durst, Michigan State University, and Dr. Esther Sullivan, University of Colorado Denver.

Noah J. Durst is Associate Professor of Urban and Regional Planning in the School of Planning, Design, and Construction at Michigan State University. In his research, he uses quantitative methods to examine issues of land use and zoning, housing development, and housing affordability. He is an expert in manufactured housing.

Esther Sullivan is an Associate Professor of Sociology at the University of Colorado Denver and a Nonresident Fellow at the Urban Institute. Her research focuses on poverty, inequality, legal regulation, and the built environment, with a special interest in manufactured housing.
