This 90-minute web conference will provide participants with an overview of financial frauds and scams including the many disguises. Conference attendees will learn about fraud statistics including trends and patterns, types of financial frauds, fraud protection measures including identifying “red flags,” and steps to take when fraud strikes including resources.
Presenter: Dr. Martie Gillen joined the University of Florida, Department of Family, Youth and Community Sciences in 2011. She has a BA in Business Administration from Morehead State University and a MBA from Sullivan University. She earned her Doctorate in Family Studies from the University of Kentucky. She also earned a Graduate Certificate in Gerontology and a Graduate Certificate in Applied Statistics from the University of Kentucky.
Prior to joining the Department, she served as an Assistant Dean for Finance and Center Administration in the College of Social Work at the University of Kentucky. In addition to her academic work, Dr. Gillen has assisted the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program by preparing tax returns for low-income families and taught tax law to volunteers. She has also served as a grant reviewer and invited presenter for United Way.
Dr. Gillen’s research interests include personal and family finance, consumer economics, older adults, Social Security retirement benefits, employment, financial social work, and innovative post-secondary education models. Dr. Gillen teaches undergraduate and graduate courses in the areas of personal and family finance and research methods.
