Do Spices and Herbs Promote Good Health?

Learn about the latest findings from Penn State and other leading academic institutions based on research funded by the McCormick Science Institute

Spices and Herbs are potentially showing health benefits and improvement in public health. The McCormick Science Institute (MSI) supports academic research nationwide. Hamid Faridi, Executive Director, will provide the purpose of MSI research, any disclaimers, and goals to work with academics and government institutions. Guy Johnson, Senior Advisor, will provide an overview of MSI’s ongoing research on spices and herbs with several different academic institutions. Travis Masterson, Assistant Professor, Penn State University, will feature his recent research and outcomes for education and improved health for the general population.

MSI Research Program: MSI supports research at leading universities and research institutions. All MSI-funded research is governed by funding guidelines and is focused on advancing the scientific study of the potential health-enhancing properties of culinary herbs and spices in areas to have the potential to impact public health. Consistent with MSI’s mission to support broad scientific understanding, all research teams that receive funding are required to submit their findings to reputable scientific journals for publication. MSI does not support research spice blends proprietary to McCormick & Co., Inc. or research on experimental animals.

Hamed Faridi is renowned as an innovative food industry leader, business executive, strategist, and board director. He is a visionary leader who conceives and implements innovative approaches to create and sustain business growth in the food manufacturing industry. Hamed retired in 2020 as the Chief Science Officer at McCormick & Company - a $5.6B global manufacturer and marketer of flavors, spices, seasonings and condiments to the entire food industry – since 2011. Hamed led a global team of over 500 scientists and flavorists with responsibility for leadership, scientific research, product development, sustainability as well as the company’s health and wellness initiative. Since December 2020, he is the founder of Faridi Strategy Group LLC and serves as the Executive Director of the McCormick Science Institute.




Dr. Guy H. Johnson is Senior Advisor to the McCormick Science Institute (MSI), which is dedicated to advancing scientific knowledge on the health benefits of culinary spices and herbs. MSI has funded more than 50 clinical trials that have investigated the ability of spice and herbs to impart beneficial physiological effects or improve diet quality. He is also principle of Johnson Nutrition Solutions LLC, a nutrition-oriented consulting firm that provides industry and professional organizations with comprehensive support for nutrition-related communications, scientific and regulatory initiatives. Prior to founding JNS, Guy was vice president of nutrition for Kellogg USA. Dr. Johnson’s background also includes extensive experience in applied nutrition science.


Dr. Travis Masterson is the Director of the Health, Ingestive Behavior, and Technology Laboratory and the Broadhurst Career Development Professor for the Study of Health Promotion and Disease Prevention at Pennsylvania State. His research focuses on food cue reactivity and how our food environment shapes our food choices and eating behaviors. His research particularly focuses on digital food and beverage marketing. He uses a variety of novel technologies and methodologies in his work including fMRI, immersive virtual reality (iVR), and ecological momentary assessment (EMA).
