Bringing together cutting-edge research from Ledger and up-to-date information from the Commodity Futures Trading Commission, this webinar will provide participants with a foundational understanding of cryptocurrency. Dr. Chris Wilmer will be training on what cryptocurrency is, how it works, and current research trends, while Mr. Dan Rutherford will be introducing cryptocurrency-related scams and how to spot them.
PRESENTERS:
Dr. Chris Wilmer is an Associate Professor of Chemical and Biological Engineering and Electrical and Computer Engineering at the University of Pittsburgh, where he leads a research lab that explores the properties of hypothetical materials using computer simulations. He is also co-founder and co-managing editor of Ledger, the world’s first academic journal dedicated to cryptocurrency research. The journal strives to serve both the general public and the cryptocurrency research community through the dissemination of high-quality and timely scholarly content. Additionally, Dr. Wilmer co-authored a book called “Bitcoin for the Befuddled”.
Mr. Dan Rutherford is the associate director of the U.S. Commodity Futures Trading Commission’s Office of Customer Education and Outreach. The Office designs and administers education initiatives to help market customers protect themselves from fraud or other violations of the Commodity Exchange Act. Prior to joining the CFTC, Mr. Rutherford was one of the first employees of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s Office of Financial Education, where he wrote or edited the majority of the Bureau’s financial education materials and led national financial education programs. In all, Mr. Rutherfordhas more than 25 years of personal finance writing and financial education experience, including being a founding member and editor of Kiplinger.com, the website for Kiplinger’s Personal Finance Magazine, and as an associate director for FINRA’s Office of Investor Education and the FINRA Foundation.
