National Urban Extension Leaders

Get engaged with NUEL! The National Urban Extension Leaders (NUEL) began in 2013 as a grass-roots effort of a group of passionate and committed urban Extension educators with the mission to advocate and advance the strategic importance and long-term value of urban Extension activities by being relevant locally, responsive statewide, and recognized nationally.

Leadership in the City Registration Open

Leadership in the City is a professional development program for Extension professionals working in urban areas who aim to be locally relevant, responsive statewide, and recognized nationally.

In the first five years of the program, 127 Extension professionals from 31 states have participated. Here’s what some of your peers had to say:

  • “Thought-provoking and a good way to learn about what others are working on across the country.”
  • “The course went beyond giving content, to encouraging critical thinking and application.”
  • “Completing the course has pushed me to explore my inner self to look deep into how I can be a better leader and how to be a more inclusive leader.”
  • “I appreciated the vast number of resources that were shared. A great investment.”

This online professional development program will help you learn about leadership, networks, innovation, marketing, management, and more. The program is based on a foundation of entrepreneurial theory and urban Extension practice and will build upon existing leadership experiences, management training, and Extension professional development.

You will learn from experienced leaders; apply what you learn in your city, region, or state; engage in critical thinking and creative problem solving; and participate in online learning.

The investment in the program is $500 plus a commitment to work hard and have fun investing approximately 8 hours per month. The 6-month online course begins in December 2022. If you have multiple participants from the same institute, you are each entitled to a $100 discount (Discount code: LITC23-MULT).

Course instructor: Ramona Madhosingh-Hector (ramona.m.hector@ufl.edu), Regional Specialized Agent, Urban Sustainability, University of Florida, IFAS Extension. Course advisor: Julie Fox (fox.264@osu.edu), Director – Urban Engagement, Ohio State University Extension. Course manager: Michelle Gaston (gaston.6@osu.edu). This course was originally developed by Ohio State University Extension.

Complete details, a printable flier, and registration can be found at go.osu.edu/urbanleadership. The deadline for registration is December 2. Registration is limited to 24 participants, so don’t delay.

We are postponing the start of the Leadership in the City course for one year. Rather than starting the course this December, it will start December 1, 2023. Running the course from December 2023 to May 2024 will allow the course to end with an in-person event at the National Urban Extension Conference.

Registration will re-open in February. Additional updated information about the 2024 course can be found here.
