Many cooperative Extension systems have experienced a recent influx of people seeking asylum. For many states, this is a new target audience to welcome and introduce to Extension programming, but they have questions about how to support them. These questions range from who are considered asylum seekers versus refugees to how we support their integration into the workforce. Please join us as Nick Ogutu, President of Safari Yangu, answers these questions and more. Safari Yangu empowers and supports American immigrants and refugees, providing a platform for them to tell their stories.
Nick is also a longtime member of Amnesty International and has organized several successful campaigns and actions that brought positive changes in different countries, including Ethiopia, Kenya, Burundi, and Cameroon. Nick Ogutu, the President of Amnesty International Bronx Chapter in New York, and his team received the prestigious Hironaka Award from Amnesty International in Washington, DC.
We will also learn from Cook County Extension staff, who will share their response to the varied needs of asylees in Chicago.
(The presentation portion of the Learning Circle will be recorded and shared with those who register.)
