Friends and Neighbors Day at the USDA-ARS Mandan Research Facility on July 18

Friends and Neighbors Day at the Northern Great Plains Research Laboratory returns this year. The free event offers agricultural science, information, and program access for the public in a family friendly setting.  Every year the event showcases research presentations, exhibits, programs, and activities for children to highlight agricultural practice in the region.

Visitors can tour the station, interact with exhibitors about agricultural issues, and join field tours to learn about current research. Various exhibitors from federal, state, and local partners will be present to share information on the health and safety of natural resources on the northern Great Plains, including Rural Development, Farm Service Agency, ND Department of Agriculture, NRCS, and more.

DETAILS:

  • The Friends and Neighbors Day tradition began in 1915.
  • Presentations, exhibits, and children’s activities begin at 2:00 p.m. and will highlight NGPRL research and agricultural organizations and resources.
  • The rangeland tour will be of the LTAR Grazinglands Common Experiment, a long term research project on prescribed fire, high intensity grazing, and native plant seeding.
  • The crop tour will feature new and insightful information into how conservation strategies impact plant ecosystem resilience and soil erosion.
  • A tractor tour will feature the NGPRL new agrivoltaics project, a switchgrass project at a rainout shelter, and a drone flying exhibition.
  • Dakota Aged Iron Club will be present with a selection of their antique tractors and a vintage farm equipment demonstration.
  • Gateway to Science will be featured in the kid friendly area holding family friendly STEM activities.
  • The event includes a free barbecue, sponsored by the Area 4 Soil Conservation Districts, from 3:00 to 6:00 p.m.
