About the Dietary Guidelines Alliance
The mission of the Dietary Guidelines Alliance is to provide positive and simple messages to help American consumers achieve healthy, active lifestyles, consistent with The Dietary Guidelines for Americans. The Alliance’s strength has been in both its commitment to a consumer-focused research program and its network of partners, which includes 16 members in liaison with the United States Department of Agriculture and Department of Health and Human Services in carrying out its mission.
About the Tool Kit
The It's All About You campaign was launched in 1996 by the Alliance in order to build nutrition message platforms that consumers could understand and use to improve their health. In 1999, the Alliance introduced the It's All About You Nutrition Communicator's Tool Kit, which has been periodically updated and evaluated to reflect the latest science and recommendations from the Dietary Guidelines for Americans and to ensure consumer relevance. The current edition was developed in collaboration with the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension Service.
The 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans and 2012 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans Midcourse Report: Strategies to Increase Physical Activity Among Youth, provided the foundation for the Tool Kit, which emphasizes the MyPlate guidance system and the primary themes including; Be Realistic, Be Active, Be Balanced, Be Adventurous and Be Sensible.
Each theme includes practical health and nutrition advice that can be easily incorporated into consumers’ lifestyles, as well as tips to help the entire family take ownership of their health. Key messages from the Tool Kit include:
·“Fun stuff counts as exercise!”
·“Take charge of your weight” and “Know your (calorie) number”
·“Expand your tastes to enjoy a variety of foods. Enjoy a variety of physical activities.”
·“Enjoy all foods, just don’t overdo it.”
