Building Cooperative Extension’s Capacity to Support Health in all Policy Issues Education: A Case for Strategic Planning

The purpose of this webinar is to share Oregon State University’s Strategic Plan for the Extension Family and Community Health Program and engage FCS leaders in exploring program capacity to support efforts, and inform policy, systems, and environmental approaches, that impact the availability and access to healthy and safe environments and assure equitable, healthy and safe choices for all families and consumers.

Associate Professor Deborah John will share a perspective on how Extension could approach this using her experience at Oregon State University’s College of Public Health and Human Sciences Health Extension Outreach, home to two Cooperative Extension programs – 4-H Youth Development and Family and Community Health (FCH; historically FCS). Recently, in response to the College’s accreditation and the publication of Cooperative Extension’s National Framework for Health and Wellness, Oregon State’s  FCH program embarked on a strategic planning journey to set a framework for multi-level action aimed at improving health outcomes and reducing disparities among Oregon populations through 2020. Included in this framework are efforts aimed at every social ecological level: individual, family, organizational, and community, as well as intervention strategies contributing to healthy and safe choices and healthy and safe environments.

About the Extension Foundation

The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. Today, the Foundation partners with Cooperative Extension through liaison roles and a formal plan of work with the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) to increase system capacity while providing programmatic services, and helping Extension programs scale and investigate new methods and models for implementing programs. The Foundation provides professional development to Cooperative Extension professionals and offers exclusive services to its members. In 2020 and 2021, the Extension Foundation has awarded 85% of its direct funding back to the Cooperative Extension System, 100% of funds are used to support Cooperative Extension initiatives.
