Join us at the ACE/NETC 2011 Bill Murphy Luncheon with keynote speaker Anya Kamenetz.
Ms. Kamenetz was one of the youngest ever columnists for the Village Voice, where she earned a Pulitzer prize nomination for her reporting on the economic challenges facing Generation Next. The series later became a highly regarded book entitled Generation Debt: The New Economics of Being Young. Written when she was just 24, Generation Debt (Riverhead Books, 2006), drew national media attention and passionate online debate with its argument that young people are facing unique and unprecedented economic challenges.
Her new book, DIY U: Edupunks, Edupreneurs, and the Coming Transformation of Higher Education, (Chelsea Green, 2010) tells the story of how technology is disrupting one of the most tradition-bound industries in the country--no industry is safe. Itβs an important book about talent, human capital, and how our institutions must evolve to meet the challenges of the next century.
She is a sought-after media expert regularly appearing on major news networks including CBS, ABC, CNN, MSNBC, FOX News, CNBC, and NPR. Currently, she covers the future of business, including sustainability and social entrepreneurship, as a writer for Fast Company magazine.
Anya will be speaking on the topic of Democratizing Education: The Key to Global Economic Growth
Global demand for higher education is expected to more than double to 250 million worldwide by 2025. Another 250 million children will never see a schoolroom. In order for industries to meet challenges from energy to security we need to leverage the world's talent. Learn how technology, social media, and collaboration among the private and public sector can help bring the benefits of education to a world that desperately needs it.
This luncheon honors William F. Murphy Jr., a member of the Virgina Tech faculty for almost 25 years, who died in 2001. Murphy was also heavily involved in the first National Extension Technology Conference, held at Virginia Tech in 1986, and served on the planning committee for the next several conferences. This conference is now the major educational event for technology enthusiasts in Cooperative Extension nationwide.
