Morgan County Master Gardeners

We are a group of energetic and enthusiastic men and women with a passion for gardening and horticulture and a desire to positively contribute to our town and county through education and volunteerism.

Each Master Gardener has completed an intense program with a minimum of 40 classroom hours, covering a wide range of gardening and horticultural topics. Upon successful completion of the final exam and after meeting the required 40 volunteer hours for the first year, we are certified. Each following year, we have additional education and volunteer hour requirements (10 and 20 respectively) to remain certified.

We are passionate about sharing what we have learned with our community. The skills and knowledge learned from this program are applied in multiple ways. With education as our focus, we:

  • Host Gardenside Chats for the public
  • Maintain the Morgan County Public Library Gardens in Berkeley Springs
  • Set up a booth at the Berkeley Springs Farmer’s Market to answer questions
  • Volunteer at the Morgan County Expo each year with an “Ask the Expert” booth and several children’s stations with hands-on activities
  • Select different opportunities each September for Day of Caring activities
  • Are present during the annual Apple Butter Festival with free seed giveaways
  • Host the yearly Plant Fair held on Mother’s Day weekend in Berkeley Springs State Park

The Morgan County Master Gardener Certification Program

The Morgan County Master Gardener Certification program is offered through West Virginia University Extension. The cost is minimal — students only pay for either the hard-copy manual or a digital copy on a flash drive. The classes are offered from January through May with two ways in which to attend: 100% virtual online instruction or a hybrid model, which includes some online classes and some in-person classes at the Extension Office in Berkeley Springs. Both choices also include several Saturday classes with a more hands-on approach. Topics include:

  • Botany
  • Vegetable Gardening
  • Soils and Fertilizers
  • Composting
  • Landscape Design
  • Gardening for Life
  • Native Plants
  • Many more

FREE SEEDS for West Virginia residents!

It's time to sign up for FREE SEEDS!🤩🌱 The Grow This Throwdown is back for 2025 with a brand new mission.🚀
Our astronaut is stranded far from home and needs your help. She only has enough supplies to last a few months. Her long-term survival and eventual rescue will depend on her ability to grow her own food. But this challenge is too big for the Grow This team alone.
New for 2025, we’ve set up command centers across the state. During the sign-up process you will be able to select from over 200 locations across all 55 counties. You will visit your selected command center in March and pick up your seeds, growing instructions and other materials.
Please await further instructions from Grow This before picking up your seeds.
As challenges present themselves to our astronaut out there, we’re going need your help brainstorming solutions and working together to solve them. Our command centers will help coordinate the efforts of local gardeners and help your counties rocket to victory in the Grow This Throwdown! The top three counties at the end of the mission will receive thousands of dollars of grant funding to make their communities healthier places to live. 👏
Get ready. This year we’re growing for the good of all. And failure is not an option.
