Veterans in Agriculture Discussion

Agriculture has become an important source of employment and healing for many veterans. A large percentage of veterans come from rural areas, even though not all of them grew up on farms. After leaving the military, they discover that working in agriculture fulfills them in ways that other occupations can’t. Join this session to learn some of the latest options for veterans involved in agriculture.

Our Presenters:

Joe Ricker is a retired Army colonel and the founder of At Ease Orchard, a nonprofit focused on getting veterans, first responders, and their family members into beekeeping and other farm activities. He is also the veteran outreach coordinator for National AgrAbility and Indiana AgrAbility, a position through which he mentors veterans and provides guidance to dozens of veterans every month on pursuing their passion of getting into agriculture. Joe is also the president of Veterans IN Farming, an organization that provides mentorship to help veterans be successful in homesteading, farming, ranching, and other types of agriculture.

Monshi Ramdass serves as the military veterans agricultural liaison (MVAL) in the U.S. Department of Agriculture. In this role he establishes effective partnerships with federal agencies, state and local governments, faith-based organizations, and nonprofits. In addition, he aids beginning veteran farmers and ranchers by providing expert information to veterans, transitioning service members, and military spouses in regard to employment, education, and entrepreneurships. Prior to serving at USDA, Mr. Ramdass worked at the Defense Intelligence Agency (DIA) as a diversity and inclusion specialist and special emphasis program manager. Mr. Ramdass served in the U.S. Army as a combat medic from 1984-2007 and retired as a command sergeant major (CSM).
