Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity: Working with LGBTQ Clients

This webinar will provide a detailed overview of sexual orientation and gender identity - offering ways to think about these two identities as separate from one another.  We will discuss the ways in which society assumes we are born one way, identify one way, and are attracted to others in one way - and how this can be detrimental to identity formation.  We will touch briefly on adolescent development; how growing up LGBTQ in an environment that doesn’t support you or see you can be harmful and how as service providers (or caring community members) we can take small steps to creating an inclusive and accepting environment.  Special attention will be given to positive ways of working with transgender and gender diverse populations.

About the Extension Foundation

The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. Today, the Foundation partners with Cooperative Extension through liaison roles and a formal plan of work with the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) to increase system capacity while providing programmatic services, and helping Extension programs scale and investigate new methods and models for implementing programs. The Foundation provides professional development to Cooperative Extension professionals and offers exclusive services to its members. In 2020 and 2021, the Extension Foundation has awarded 85% of its direct funding back to the Cooperative Extension System, 100% of funds are used to support Cooperative Extension initiatives.
