Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder

MSU Extension’s Capacity Building Work Team in the Children and Youth Institute is excited to partner with Partners for Youth with Disabilities (PYD) based in Boston, MA for the following webinar, Understanding Autism Spectrum Disorder.

In March of 2014, the CDC updated the prevalence of autism spectrum disorders (ASD) to one in every 68 children up from one in 150 in 2000. This increase highlights the urgency for youth programs to better understand and serve this population. This training will provide an overview of ASD, including common strengths and challenges. Participants will learn tips for communication, behavior management, role modeling proper social etiquette, and encouraging active participation for youth with ASD. The presentation format will be a mix of content and interactive case studies. Participants will learn practical tips on enhancing the ability of organizations and programs to be more inclusive of individuals with ASD.

This webinar will take place on August 30 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. If you’re not able to make it on the webinar for this date and time, we will have the same webinar on August 31 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m.

We will have Kristin Humphrey, Mentoring Director, from Partners for Youth with Disabilities facilitating this webinar.  She oversees the Mentor Match program at PYD to ensure that the program goals are met. A strong proponent of mentoring, she has been involved with mentoring for over a decade, beginning with her role as a volunteer mentor. She is a member of the National Mentoring Resource Stakeholder council and the National Disability Mentoring Coalition. She has worked with youth with disabilities for the past nine years and founded a club at Connecticut College that facilitated group mentoring for siblings of youth with disabilities. She co-authored the manuscript, "Expanding Horizons: A Pilot Mentoring Program Linking College/Graduate Students and Teens with ASD,” which was published in the Journal of Clinical Pediatrics in 2015. She has presented regionally and nationally on the topics of mentoring and inclusion. She graduated magna cum laude from Connecticut College with a BA in Psychology and was a selected scholar for the Holleran Center’s Program in Community Action and Public Policy. She holds a graduate certificate in Human Service Management from Clark University and is currently pursuing a Master in Public Administration from Clark University (MPA expected in 2017).
