Engaging Teens & Older Youth

Does your 4-H program struggle to keep 4-H teens and older youth involved? Are you looking for ways to keep teenagers interested and active in 4-H? The 2013-2014 North Central Regional Volunteer e-Forum’s second session has strategies to increase engagement as well as data on the benefits of 4-H leadership activities for youth. Youth leadership can be an important factor in growing and sustaining strong 4-H programs, but how much do you know about the positive impacts of leadership activities on youth? “The 2011 Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development leadership study found that participation in leadership activities strengthens youth skills like public speaking and communication, teamwork and conflict resolution that are increasingly important to employers,” says Kandi O’Neil, volunteer specialist with Wisconsin 4-H Youth Development/University of Wisconsin. Kandi will present this program along with youth development colleagues from the University of Minnesota and North Dakota State University. Volunteers are invited to tune into this session of the 2013-2014 NCRV e-Forum with Becky Harrington, University of Minnesota; Kandi O’Neil, University of Wisconsin; Brenda Shafer, University of Minnesota; and Rachelle Vettern, North Dakota State University. The program can be viewed at https://connect.msu.edu/cyi/ at 8:00 p.m Eastern (7:00PM Central, and 6:00PM Mountain). Sessions will be 90 minutes in length. The NCRV e-Forum is a chance to watch presentations live, send questions to the experts and participate in discussions with adult leaders from around the region. The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. Today, the Foundation partners with Cooperative Extension through liaison roles and a formal plan of work with the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) to increase system capacity while providing programmatic services, and helping Extension programs scale and investigate new methods and models for implementing programs. The Foundation provides professional development to Cooperative Extension professionals and offers exclusive services to its members.
