Your HELP needed on inventory of Climate Change Extension Programs

As eXtension Foundation Climate Fellows, we are reaching out to ask for your participation in our national study. We are creating a database of Extension programs relating to climate and extreme weather adaptation and mitigation. By cross-referencing eXtension’s work with the Drawdown Review’s climate solutions, we hope to find Cooperative Extension Service’s strengths when addressing climate and extreme weather issues, and where Extension may have room for improvement. 

Do you know of any exemplary Extension programs that focus on adapting to a changing climate, mitigating the impact of extreme weather, expanding carbon sinks or reducing greenhouse gas emissions? These programs could focus on:

  • Climate education
  • Extreme weather preparedness and response
  • Environmental awareness and/or literacy
  • Sustainability
  • Renewable energy and/or electrification
  • Climate-smart food systems (e.g., food, agriculture, land-use)
  • Sustainable transportation 
  • Efficient buildings 
  • Land sinks (e.g., building soil carbon, agroforestry, regenerative agriculture)
  • Ocean sinks (e.g., restoration of kelp forests) 
  • Engineered sinks (e.g., negative emissions technologies like biochar)

About the Extension Foundation

The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. Today, the Foundation partners with Cooperative Extension through liaison roles and a formal plan of work with the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) to increase system capacity while providing programmatic services, and helping Extension programs scale and investigate new methods and models for implementing programs. The Foundation provides professional development to Cooperative Extension professionals and offers exclusive services to its members. In 2020 and 2021, the Extension Foundation has awarded 85% of its direct funding back to the Cooperative Extension System, 100% of funds are used to support Cooperative Extension initiatives.
