A new publication - Water Saver: Oklahoma Master Irrigator Program - is available from the Extension Foundation. It documents the Oklahoma State Master Irrigator Program, which is helping Oklahoma farmers respond to the challenges they face due to decreasing water levels (a consequence of climate change.)
Inspired by a program developed by the North Plains Groundwater Conservation District, a team of academics at Oklahoma State University created a Master Irrigator program to help farmers manage irrigation. The publication describes the process they used to create the program, including assembling an advisory panel to help create the curriculum. It provides detailed information about participant recruitment (including incentives) and program impacts.
Members of the Oklahoma State team are Extension specialists Sumit Sharma, PhD (who authored the publication); Saleh Taghvaeian, PhD; Jason Warren, PhD; and Kevin Wagner, PhD, who is an Associate Professor at OSU and also serves as the director of the Oklahoma Water Resources Center.
The project was supported by a grant from the New Technologies in Agricultural Extension (NTAE) program. The team was supported in their work by the Extension Foundation.
