Head of McCormick Science Institute's Shout Out to Nutrition Education!

On Tuesday, January 18, 2022 the Executive Director of the McCormick Science Institute, Dr. Hamed Faridi, appeared on Progress, Potential, and Possibilities’ YouTube channel podcast.

Dr. Faridi heavily showcased USDA, the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, and the Thrifty Food Plan given that this is the basis for MSI’s research program, as well as its translational work. Specifically:

  • Throughout the interview, he highlighted the importance of USDA and its programs, citing the Dietary Guidelines and Thrifty Food Plan.
  • He gave specific kudos to USDA for its important efforts on achieving food and nutrition security, noting that there are many components that come into play including accessibility, availability, affordability of food, not to mention flavor and enjoyment especially as it relates to cultural cuisines and traditions.
  • He talked about the importance of reducing dietary sodium, saturated fat, and added sugars.
  • And last, but definitely not least, he noted the importance of nutrition education through USDA and Cooperative Extension.

About the Extension Foundation

The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. Today, the Foundation partners with Cooperative Extension through liaison roles and a formal plan of work with the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) to increase system capacity while providing programmatic services, and helping Extension programs scale and investigate new methods and models for implementing programs.
