Creating High Trust Environments in Organizations

"For society to function, people must believe in the institutions meant to serve them. They need to know that the government is acting in their best interests, that businesses are operating ethically and efficiently, that nonprofits are improving their communities, and that the media is delivering timely, accurate information. Trust creates the conditions for these organizations to carry out their missions (Aspen Institute).

A recent article by Aspen Institute's Executive Director Maureen Conway and Associate Director Matt Helmer shares tips for organizational leaders who want to create high-trust environments.

Key Takeaways:

  • Low-income workers report feeling less trusted by their bosses than their higher-earning counterparts. They believe their skills are undervalued.
  • Workers who are constantly monitored and under threat of replacement are less engaged and productive.
  • Companies that develop workers’ skills and engage them in decision-making experience a competitive advantage over their peers.

About the Extension Foundation

The Extension Foundation was formed in 2006 by Extension Directors and Administrators. Today, the Foundation partners with Cooperative Extension through liaison roles and a formal plan of work with the Extension Committee on Organization and Policy (ECOP) to increase system capacity while providing programmatic services, and helping Extension programs scale and investigate new methods and models for implementing programs. The Foundation provides professional development to Cooperative Extension professionals and offers exclusive services to its members. In 2020 and 2021, the Extension Foundation has awarded 85% of its direct funding back to the Cooperative Extension System, 100% of funds are used to support Cooperative Extension initiatives.
